Model Overview

The Chevrolet Sonic comes loaded with personality and is available in enough configurations to suit most buyers.

For starters, buyers can choose between a 5-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan with LS, LT and Premier trims available. Only one engine option is available in 2019; a turbocharged 1.4L 4-cylinder produces 138 horsepower and a healthy 148 lb-ft of torque. Performance is sprightly, especially when paired with the standard 6-speed manual, though a 6-speed automatic is also offered.

The Sonic benefits from an incredibly stiff, steel chassis with MacPherson struts up front and a torsion-beam axle in the rear. Stability control and traction control are standard, but can be switched off.

Standard amenities include Bluetooth connectivity, a 7-inch touchscreen, air conditioning, power locks, keyless entry and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat as well. The LT trim adds 15-inch aluminum wheels, heated body-colored mirrors, SiriusXM satellite radio, steering wheel mounted buttons for the cruise control and a nicer 6-speaker stereo system. The top-of-the-line Premier comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels, a Sport exhaust system, a decklid spoiler, unique styling elements around the front and rear of the car, a nicer steering wheel, keyless entry, an enhanced driver information center, nicer floor mats and perforated leather seating surfaces.

Standard safety features include 10 air bags, StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover sensor and traction control, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and panic assist, OnStar and hill-start assist.

The Chevrolet Sonic continues into 2019 with several notable changes. The biggest news is that the base 1.8L 4-cylinder has been axed, meaning that all Sonics will now come with the smaller but more efficient 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder. Despite its smaller size, the 1.4L engine actually makes the same horsepower and more torque than the old 1.8L. So, base model 2019 Sonics should be faster and more efficient than 2018 models. In conjunction with this change, several trims have been deleted and a new Premier trim now sits at the top of the range in 2019.

The subcompact segment seems to get larger by the year and the 2019 Sonic faces stiff competition from established players like the Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit. With its nimble chassis and turbocharged 1.4L engine, the Sonic offers a spirited driving experience its rivals can't match. Sedan or hatchback body styles also give it an extra edge.
